Living at Pier 27 means access to all of Toronto’s waterfront amenities in just steps. With the waterfront revitalization that we’re experiencing now, that means access to the most anticipated updates to the city in years.
One project that has stirred up a lot of buzz lately is the Jack Layton Ferry Terminal. The original ferry terminal, which was known as the Toronto Island Ferry Docks until it was renamed in 2013, was built in the early 1900s and has been taking people to Toronto Island and back since then. More recently, the city put out a call for designers to submit their plan for a total overhaul of the docks. The winner was picked in April 2015 and now our neighbourhood is set for a major update.
The new ferry terminal will integrate perfectly with all of the other updates in the area. The wavy and curvaceous surfaces have become a motif along the lakeshore and this area will be no different. It will be pedestrian-friendly with lots of green space, making the Jack Layton Ferry Terminal the perfect first stop before a day on the island.
There were a number of notable firms that entered the design contest and the winning proposal came from KPMB Architects and Greenberg Consultants, both Toronto-based firms, along with West 8 which has offices in New York, Belgium, and Rotterdam. Their progressive design will be the perfect addition to our neighbourhood.
