Introducing Toronto’s New Animating Our Waterfront Project

AnimatingWaterfront

Since the 1999 creation of the revitalization task force joining federal, provincial, and municipal governments, we’ve seen a great deal of growth take place on Toronto’s waterfront. The focus over the past decade has been a combination of design excellence, innovative and sustainable development, as well as public accessibility to the waterfront. With the increase in public transit, open spaces, and beautiful developments (such as Pier 27), the organization is well on its way to reaching their goals. Next up? A project that’s designed to make use of these public spaces and showcase the city’s greatest creative talent: the Animating Our Waterfront program. Continue reading

TORONTO BEACHES

With warm weather well on its way, the people of Toronto are frantically putting pen to paper and composing their summer bucket lists. These may include ‘taking a scenic hike’, ‘eating all the ice cream the city has to offer’, or ‘doing an epic patio crawl’. With an endless number of summer activities in Toronto, it’s easy for your list to grow to staggering lengths (this is a good thing!), but there’s one quintessential outing you simply must include – going to the beach!
Here’s a list of the beaches to visit in and around the city! Continue reading

What’s In a Name – Update on Under Gardiner Project

under gardiner

With new developments constantly popping up in the news, it’s no wonder Toronto’s Waterfront has been unofficially dubbed ‘The One To Watch.’ One of the most exciting new projects in the area is the Under Gardiner Project – a public space set to inhabit 10 acres beneath the raised highway and include 1.75km of multi-use trail. We’re currently in the midst of a 4 month campaign – ‘Reclaim the Name’ – which began as an open call to the community to contribute ideas to name the space. The campaign is currently entering Phase Two – with more excitement expected to follow. Continue reading

PIER 27 HEADER

It’s already begun and it’s just going to get bigger and better.

What are we talking about? Toronto’s Waterfront Development of course!
Plans have been in motion for years now, and changes can already be seen. No longer a post-industrial, forgotten area of the city – the Toronto waterfront has transformed into a vibrant community, whose new architectural and public space developments are gaining international attention. Among the revitalization projects (including all three phases of Pier 27!) are a pedestrian and cyclist bridge, a visitor’s centre, and a park beneath the Gardiner. While all of this new development is under way in our city – let’s take a look at five waterfront developments from around the world that we love right now. Continue reading

A brand new winter festival is coming to Toronto this month and we promise that it’s going to be an extra sweet deal!

On March 12th and 13th you can head to Sugar Beach to check out the first ever Sugar Shack Toronto festival. Originating in Québec, the official name for this type of event is cabane à sucre, which translates to ‘sugar shack.’ Hosted by Waterfront Toronto, we’re really excited to be one of the sponsors for this awesome new winter festival (and as an added bonus, it’s being held at one of our favourite spots in the city!). Phase 1 & 2 Win Silver at the Canadian National Pool & Spa Association Awards!

Pier 27 Pool

If there’s one thing we pride ourselves on, it’s working with great designers across all aspects of our projects. Everything from the interior, exterior, to amenity design is carefully planned out so that our owners not only have a functional and liveable space, but so they’re proud to show it off.

Back in December our work at Pier 27 Phase 1 and 2 with Munge Leung, architects Alliance, and Dominus, was honoured by the Canadian National Pool and Spa Association at the 35th annual Canadian Pool and Spa Conference and Expo in Niagara. The two-day expo had over 125 companies from the pool and spa industry showing off their products, in addition to the National Awards ceremony that took place. We’re happy to announce that the pools at both Phase 1 and 2 of Pier 27 took home Silver Awards at the ceremony: Best Special Use Pool Across Canada and Best Public Swim Spa! Continue reading

With a community of people living there year round, the islands don’t close up during the winter. Ferries still operate and there’s plenty to do across the lake in the winter!

10610555_980838648626133_6023012776754826944_n

Was your New Year’s resolution to have more fun with your friends and family? What about being more active? If you answered ‘yes’ to both (or even one) of these questions, then you need to check out DJ Skate Night.

This event has been going on for many winters in Toronto now. DJ Skate Night transforms our favourite ice skating rink, the Natrel Rink at the Harbourfront Centre, into a mini dance club. Every Saturday night they bring in a new DJ to entertain the crowd so you can dance – or skate – the night away. It’s one of our favourite outdoor activities to do in winter and with a new theme and performance each week, it never gets old!

Here’s what you can expect at DJ Skate Night for the remainder of the 2016 season:

January 9th
DJ John Kong will be spinning at DJ Skate Night this weekend. He is a Toronto-based DJ who is well known in the city for playing an awesome mix of soul, jazz, funk, and disco tunes. A guaranteed good time!

January 16th
Wavelength is a non-profit and artist-run organization in Toronto whose focus is on creating amazing music festival and event experiences. They’ll be bringing their friends from Synthesexer to DJ Skate Night this week, who will be playing a selection of electro-pop, italo disco, and house music.

January 23rd
The Small World Music Society is bringing DJ medicineman to the Natrel Rink this week. Their show promises to bring a great mix of tunes and beats from around the globe. If you listen to CIUT 89.5 FM, you’re likely already a fan. Can’t wait to check this one out.

January 30th
DJ P-Plus will be taking over DJ Skate Night on FLOW 93.5 FM night. The only description for what you can expect from him is that he’s bringing “old school to life.”

February 6th
Ever had a French Caribbean DJ dance party? If you’re intrigued, you’ll want to come to DJ Skate Night this weekend to learn what Kizomba, Bachata, and Kompa is all about.

February 13th
If you’re looking for a pre-Valentine’s activity, this is perfect! You may have heard DJ Trambo at Lula Lounge in Toronto before – he’s all about bringing the topics to the dance floor or in this case, the rink. The perfect cure for the winter blues!

DJ Skate Nights happen every Saturday this winter from 8pm to 11pm. It’s always free to attend, and you can take advantage to the heated indoor change room, lockers, washrooms, and skate rentals on site.

See you there!
